Chilika Waste-to-Value initiative focuses on converting invasive Phragmites karka biomass from the Chilika wetland into useful, marketable products while creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for local communities. The initiative promotes a circular-economy approach by utilizing different parts of the biomass to produce green straws, handicrafts, and green agarbatti (incense sticks). The process involves harvesting and pre-processing the biomass through sorting, drying, shredding, and other value-addition activities. Local community members, including women SHG members and biomass harvesters, are engaged in various stages of production, including straw manufacturing, handicraft making, agarbatti production, and biomass collection. The initiative has created opportunities for local income generation while promoting the productive utilization of an invasive wetland resource. More than 2,000 green straws, 400 handicraft products, and 2,500 green agarbatti sticks have been produced using the harvested biomass and its residual materials.

The initiative also emphasizes skill development among SHG members and supports the establishment of sustainable livelihood opportunities within the local community. Discussions with ORMAS and Odisha Livelihoods Mission (OLM) are being explored to facilitate market linkages, exhibitions, rural marketing, and wider integration of SHG-produced goods.

Overall, the initiative combines environmental sustainability, waste utilization, local enterprise development, and livelihood generation by transforming an invasive natural resource into value-added products.
