Bringing Dead Borewells Back to Life
Water & Land Conservation
Location:
Ballari district, Karnataka
Years Active
FY 2025–26
Lives Impacted:
26,616 villagers
Partner:
Third Planet Foundation
Program:
Across Ballari district, borewells that had gone dry are being brought back through recharge work - structures and techniques that let rainwater and surface run-off percolate back into the ground instead of draining away, letting depleted aquifers replenish naturally rather than continuing their decline. It's slower and less visible than drilling a new borewell, but it addresses the actual cause of the shortage instead of just working around it for one more season. Recorded reach stands at 26,616 villagers, run in partnership with the Third Planet Foundation - though that number is large enough relative to other interventions here that it's worth the team confirming exactly what population it's counting.
